From the Principal

School Production

Congratulations to the Hairspray Production Cast & Crew who performed to sold out shows on Friday and Saturday Night. Over 90 students were involved in this wonderful show and all those who attended were blown away by the talent on display. Last Thursday at our College Assembly we acknowledged our Year 12 students for the way they have pursued excellence in their academic studies and in the same way the students involved in this Production can be very proud of the excellence they have achieved as a result of their dedication and persistence over the last four months of rehearsals.

This is only ever possible with great coaching from our very talented crew who gave our students both support and challenge over the last four months to bring this wonderful show together.

Science Week

National Science Week has taken place at the East & West Campus this week under the theme of 'Drones, Droids, and Robots'. A number of activities have been staged by our science staff to highlight the connection and pathways provided by the combination of studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

Students presented their hypotheses as part of the Year 7 Science Fair, entered into an Interhouse STEM Project Competition, and enjoyed some friendly competition playing soccer with robots. On Friday we will also have our 'Scientist in Residence' Mr Stephen Van Der Velden bring in a Hex-copter drone from the Department of Defence for a lunchtime demonstration, which will be sure to draw a large crowd. My thanks to our passionate team of Science Staff lead by Mr Barber and Mrs Brown for engaging our students in the wonders of science.

West Campus Athletics Carnival

Last Tuesday the West Campus travelled to Casey Fields Athletics Complex under blue skies to conduct the 2016 Athletics Carnival. Fantastic participation and attendance by our students made it one of the best carnivals conducted at St Peter’s College, no doubt drawing inspiration from our athletes at the Rio Games.

This year Assisi House narrowly won the shield for House Spirit from MacKillop House and Romero House took out the honour of overall 2016 House Athletics Champion for the West Campus. I congratulate Mr DeGoldi, the PE staff and all staff for conducting such a professional and well run carnival.

The East Campus Athletics Carnival will take place next Tuesday.

East Campus News

The sun has finally begun to shine and there has been a noticeable lift in energy and enthusiasm around East Campus as a result. The weather was in all likelihood not the only reason for the lift in spirits. For many staff and students the beginning of the week was a time of reflection and recollection of the outstanding achievements gained by involvement in this year’s Musical Production– Hairspray the Musical.

It was an outstanding Production with many quality performances, that collectively created a sensational show. Many educational learnings can be gained from involving oneself in a Production. These can include: working in a team, collaboration, effective listening, the development of a persistent and strong work ethic, and, not to mention, effectively developing literacy and performance skills.

As far as teamwork goes there are probably not too many bigger projects in a school that demand all students and staff working together to produce the best possible outcome. Congratulations to all students who were involved. Special thanks also to Ms Karen Williams, Mr Duane Cox and Mr Brian Wallwork for the countless hours spent in supporting our students.

The sun has also assisted in ensuring our building project gets off the ground in a timely fashion. The concrete trucks rolled in early in the week as the first concrete pours signalled the commencement of our foundations. And so the building has commenced.......

A big congratulations to our Science staff and all students who engaged in Science week this week. Activities included Science Fair, Grand Prix racing, Robotics, toothbrush races, fun with Chemistry, and Drone flying. Engagement with science is particularly important in this changing world in which we live. Who knows we might have the next Einstein amongst our students.

Soup Day

During the week, Assisi and Avila House organised for the whole school to participate in a Soup Day. The proceeds of which went towards fund-raising for St Vincent de Paul. It was great to see so many students and staff participating in the event. An activity such as this has a two-fold purpose, the first is to raise money to support the most vulnerable in our local community, and secondly it serves as an awareness raising exercise where the focus is on others not just ourselves. I congratulate Assisi and Avila House students and staff for their involvement.

Athletic Sports

A reminder that next Tuesday we hold our annual East Campus House Athletic sports. This is a compulsory attendance day for students. It is also one of only a few events held throughout the year where the whole school community comes together. Parents are reminded that Year 7-10 students should be in PE uniform and Year 11 & 12 in House colours. The venue is Casey Fields Athletics Complex. Students will be bused to and from the College, they may not be dropped off at Casey Fields. ALL students must return their excursion forms as a matter of some urgency.

School Zone

Council have in the last week erected school zone 40km signage on both Heather Grove and MacKillop Way roads. Parents are reminded to adhere to speed limits when entering onto either of these roads. With an increasing number of students on Campus it is imperative to ensure the safety of all students.

Council has been approached to create designated crossing points. The feedback to date is that they will continue to monitor traffic flow to ascertain the need. To this end a road counter strip has been laid this week to assist council in determining the need.

The Resilient Child

Resilience in children has been flavour of the month for some time now, yet its importance has not faded. We often here phrases such as, “children aren’t as resilient as they used to be”, or, “I wouldn’t let things like that worry me when I was their age”, or, “she is acting like a bit of a princess”.

What we as parents, and teachers alike, need to be reminded of is that the world is a little different now than the one we grew up in. I came across this article the other day and share it with you here. There are some great strategies that both teachers and parents can use, as well as some very clear reasons articulated for why resilience is an important focus. Click here:

Important also is a reminder that the House System at St Peter’s College and the way Pastoral Care is structured here, enables important connections between home and our Collegel. I invite you to make full use of this relationship.


Recently parents would have received a survey about how you feel about how we as a College deliver Student Wellbeing Programs. Over the next week students will also be asked to provide feedback on how they see us deliver Student Wellbeing Programs at our College. In particular the focus is to establish, and if we can, further develop and explore ideas around our community’s mental health and wellbeing. It is an opportunity for students to have a voice about what is happening here at their College. I look forward to presenting the findings in the coming weeks.

West Campus News

McGuigan Shield House Competition

The West Campus Inter-house Athletics Carnival on Tuesday was a terrific success with increased participation on previous years. Congratulations to all students who ran, threw, and jumped to the best of their ability. Romero House won the West Campus Athletics Shield for the second year in a row and Assisi House won the House Spirit Award.  

Congratulations to Marian House on winning the House Volleyball Competition over Glowrey House. This event was very well organised by MacKillop House. Ms Janelle McRae and House Captains, Britney Phillips and Stephen De Paoli did a great job in promoting inclusion, particularly with some very competitive staff members.

Kolbe House Leader, Ms Michele McArdle and House Captains Bethany Dodgson and Matthew Simpson have organised the House Dodgeball that has begun this week in the Multi-Purpose Hall.

House Chess continues on Thursday and the finals begin on Friday of this week with the Grand Final next week. It is a very tight competition with only three points separating the top three teams: MacKillop, Augustine and Assisi Houses.

Science Week

As we celebrate Science Week, students are producing some very interesting projects. I was particularly impressed by an attempt to bust the myth about the five second rule. It has been long held belief in my own family that any food picked off the floor within five seconds is still fine to consume.

Alas, I now know this is not the case, although our students showed certain surfaces produce more bacteria than others. I am confident that we are producing students who will go on to bigger and better research, perhaps even in the area of climate change science. This is especially important at a time when certain politicians undermine the excellent work of scientists by denying or doubting the integrity of their research.

Science West

A STEM Competition organised by Ms Louise Mansfield was run on Wednesday. Each House entered a team of up to six students who had approximately twelve minutes to investigate an object using a limited number of materials (think stop watches, rulers, etc) and present their findings to a judging panel in ninety sec. They were judged on the following criteria:

  • Scientific understandings
  • Mathematical understandings
  • Experimental method/investigative skills
  • Innovation and Creativity
  • Presentation skills
  • Team dynamics and diversity

Not only was this activity fun but it engaged some of our more scientific students who may not have had a chance to shine in some of the other Inter-House Competitions. The winning House was Romero House and Augustine House came a close second.

It was a fantastic activity, the buzz in the Donnelly Building foyer was really positive and enthusiastic. It was wonderful to see students from different year levels working together. A special mention to Avila House who were particularly creative with their materials.

Facial Hair

The College Uniform and Appearance Policy is very clear on the issue of facial hair. Boys must be clean-shaven. Students are asked to ensure they shave in the morning prior to arriving at school. If Learning Advisors or House Leaders are not satisfied with adherence to this rule, boys will be given the following options:

  1. Use a school razor and return immediately to class (school preferred option)
  2. Go home and use a razor and then return to school immediately
  3. If a student is unable to go home, he will work in isolation for the day

If a student does not like using the school supplied razors, then it is important that they come to school clean shaven. Please encourage your son to follow these rules that he has accepted by enrolling in the College.

Practice Examinations

The purpose of Practice Examinations is to ensure that each student who plans to sit a VCE Exam this year feels confident that they are well prepared and able to achieve the very best possible result.

The College has therefore arranged Practice Examinations during the upcoming September school holidays. Exams will be scheduled over the four days from 26th September to 29th Setember.

Any student who is currently undertaking a Unit 3 /4 VCE study will be required to participate in Practice Exams in each subject. These trial exams provide valuable exam technique practise together with timely feedback from staff to assist all students in preparing for their final Year 12 exams.

These Practice Examinations will take place in the College Hall for West Campus students and in the Discovery Centre for East Campus students, under strict examination conditions. As such students will be required to wear their full College uniform. 

Attendance is compulsory for all eligible students in the assigned periods. Students will be required to remain in the examination for the entire allocated time and will not be able to exit the Examination Room prior to the conclusion of their Examination. Formal VCAA Examination conditions will be applied. Students will need to attend with the correct approved materials such as pens, pencils, and calculators (where appropriate). Religious Education News

Late last year Pope Francis wrote to the world proclaiming a Year of Mercy.

The final part of those words are:

"In this Jubilee Year, may the Church echo the word of God that resounds strong and clear as a message and a sign of pardon, strength, aid, and love.

May she never tire of extending mercy, and be ever patient in offering compassion and comfort.

May the Church become the voice of every man and woman, and repeat confidently without end: “Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old” (Ps 25:6)".

Just recently College staff member, Ms Maria Gonsalvez joined with over two and a half million others at World Youth Day where the Year of Mercy was celebrated.

We would like to encourage students, staff and families to think about the Year of Mercy and to carry out some of the acts of mercy. In the Student Bulletin each week we will focus on a different act of mercy to help us to make something of this experience as the year draws to a close (Nov 20).

In the Student Bulletin this week we are focussing on:

  • feeding the hungry

That might mean volunteering to feed the hungry or educating yourself about world hunger, or even trying to avoid wasting food.

Each week we will publish a different act of mercy for you all to consider.

The Church will be closed again after the morning Mass on Monday 22nd August as the new carpet is being repaired.

Migrant and Refugee Sunday Mass :

Will be held on Sunday 18th September, 2.00pm at St Agatha’s Parish. Bishop Pat O’Regan will be concelebrating. All Welcome! Afternoon tea will be held in the Primary School Hall after Mass.

Parish Music Ministry:

St Agatha’s Charismatic Prayer Group:

St Vincent De Paul Society

Our annual Winter appeal will be held next weekend 20th & 21st August. A special collection will be taken up at all Masses. Envelopes will be available the week prior for those who wish to receive a receipt or pay by credit card. All donations over $2 are tax deductable. Also we would welcome donations of blankets and not perishable foodstuffs.  We still need volunteers to help with visitations in the evenings and on the weekends. If you can help please contact us on 5996 1758.

When our blessed Mother appeared to the children at Garabandal in Spain one of the young girls Conchita said she was so happy that she could go to heaven with her right then. Our Lady said “that she could not because her hands were empty.  She said that when she went to heaven, her hands had to be full of good deeds”.  Are your hands full, come and join us and we will help you fill them with good works for the poor.”

Sausage Sizzle for Youth Retreat

We hope to have a combined Parish Youth Retreat in September so we shall be having a Sausage sizzle from next Sunday to help raise funds for the retreat. Please offer us your full support.

Diocesan Pilgramage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help

At St Mary’s Cathedral Sale. Bishop Patrick O’Regan will lead the pilgrimage, at 1.30 pm on Sunday 11th September. The pilgrimage will commence from Cathedral Hall (cnr of MacAlister & Pearson Sts, Sale) and the journey continues to the Port of Sale, passing by the edge of Lake Guthridge, continuing to Ramahyuck Aboriginal Centre and arriving at the Cathedral where there will be a ritual of entry through the Door of Mercy and a Liturgy of the Word in the Cathedral.

VTAC Preferences – Year 12’s to submit this Term

Year 12 students need to submit their VTAC applications this term.  Support is available through our Campus Careers Coordinator to submit application and discuss Pathways into your courses of interest.

Submitting an application by 28th September will cost $32.00. If students wait until after this date the cost will rise to $100.00. Resilience for Life Workshop

Resilience for Life is an interactive program developed to give adults positive coping skills to better navigate challenging life experiences, and effectively manage the associated feelings – to be resilient for life!


  • Develop the skills of mindfulness and relaxation
  • Explore thinking in positive ways
  • Develop problem solving strategies
  • Learn ways to deal with conflict
  • Understand the meaning and importance of resilience

Shared Stories 2017

Shared Stories is an annual anthology of creative works by Primary and Secondary students from Catholic Schools across the Archdioceses of Melbourne, Sale and Sandhurst. The anthology forms part of the permanent collection of the State Library of Victoria which is up-dated yearly as an ongoing process.

Artworks, written pieces and poems selected, will be showcased in the prestigious ‘Shared Stories Anthology Book.’ It is a fantastic opportunity to have a piece of your creative work presented as part of a book for all to see.

This year’s theme is ‘Connection & Renewal’.

This is open to all students from Year 7- 12. All materials and techniques are welcome including; photography, painting, drawing, printing, stencilling and mixed-media.

Entries close: Monday 29th August, Week 8.

Victorian Dairy Assistance Funding

Any student enrolled at the beginning of Term 3, where one or both parents own, share farm, lease or work on a dairy farm can apply for the Governement Assistance Program and the College will receive $375.00 per student to offset any camps, sports, excursion or other school based education expenses incurred by the family (i.e. school fees).

Applications need to be lodged by the school by 2nd December 2016, but can be submitted earlier. This is a one-off payment and the Assistance Program ceases at the end of 2016. Click here for information:

40 Hour Famine


My name is Natalia and I am in Year 10 at the East Campus.

I am doing the 40 Hour Famine this weekend, to make a stand against global hunger, and to help families and especially children in need.

I will be giving up food, the only thing I can eat is Barley Sugar and drink Water, Tea, and Fruit Juice. I am wanting to get an understanding of how these people live and struggle.

Did you know that the biggest number of people who are homeless are under 25 years old?

The amount of homelessness and people living in poverty is on the rise.

I ask that everyone make a small donation to The World Vision 40 Hour Famine. Just $20.00 can help a whole family, access food for a whole month.

Ms Michele McArdle joined St. Peter's College in 2016, as our Kolbe House Leader, at the West Campus. Michele will tell us a little of her journey to St Peter’s College and her role as House Leader, and the importance of St Peter’s College philosophy in ‘Educating the whole child’, which includes the all-important Pastoral Care Program, delivered by our House System. Michele has had a full and varied career to date, encompassing Head of Media Studies, Year Level Co-ordinator, English Convenor and English, History, PE and Religious Education teacher. Michele will also share a little of her role as Ambassador for One Girl.
