Stations of the Cross

On Wednesday of this week our school stopped to re-enact the Stations of the Cross to bring into focus the central message of our catholic faith through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Stations  are performed by our Year 12 students each year and convey the difficult messages of Christ's suffering and ultimate crucifixion which we can only really understand in the context of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. In Christ we find God’s promise to all of humanity, eternal life.

SIS Performance Evening

On Tuesday night our students performed at “The Big Night - Music & Dance Review as part of the Southern Independent Schools Association annual performance evening.  The event was held at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong and our students completed two rehearsal days prior to performing before an enthusiastic crowd made up of students and families from all 16 members schools.

From St Peter’s College 30 students were involved either performing or backstage and I congratulate them on sharing their talents and being such wonderful ambassadors for our school. I thank the following staff who worked closely with the students in their preparation and on the night, Miss Karissa Robertson, Miss Karen Williams, Mr Brian Wallwork, Ms Melinda Quirrillo and Mr Daniel Coco.

Mitch Rabot Shield

The Mitch Rabot Shield was fiercely fought between staff and students over two consecutive lunchtimes. This annual cricket match between Year 12 students and staff is named in honour of Mr Mitch Rabot, a longtime staff member of the College whose passion for cricket and coaching, saw the development of many fine young cricketers from St Peter’s College over the last 20 years. In a shortened format of the game, the staff team lead by Mr Brannan made 70 runs of 8 overs. At the time of writing this article the students were closing in on the target. The Mitch Rabot Shield will be presented to the winner at the first assembly next term.

I farewell Mr Vaughan Anderson who leaves us at the end of Term 1 and thank him for his fine service to the St Peter’s College over a number of years. Mr Jim Constantinou has been appointed to the role of ICT Coach at the West Campus beginning Term 2.

PTV Upgrades to Casey Area

I share with you an email received by the College from PTV regarding proposed changes to the public transport to the Casey area.  This could mean more access to buses, particularly for the students attending the East Campus. A member of staff attended that consultation held in Cranbourne on Tuesday 15th March 2016 and has put forward our requirements for consideration. I encourage you to access the online survey to leave feedback regarding the proposed changes and also to have your say about what is required. End of Term

The first term has flown by and I look forward to seeing many of our parents at the end of term interviews taking place this Wednesday and Thursday. I wish all of our families a safe and Holy Easter Holiday hoping that you enjoy some relaxing family time and some structured study and revision time particularly for our senior students.

East Campus News

Speaking to staff over the past week, two common threads emerge. The first is the disbelief that we are on the verge of finishing Term 1, the second is how busy the term has been. It comes as no surprise that these two themes are mentioned in the same breath. Reflecting on the variety of events including, sporting events, Year 12 Retreat, Opening College Mass and the official opening of the Coffey Centre, social justice experiences, HPV events, excursions, PAT testing for Year 7s, welcome evening for parents, the additional 140 students welcomed to the school, Project Compassion, Harmony Day, and Stations of the Cross. All of this on top of the formal learning taking place in the classroom; it is little wonder that the term has flown by. An engaged and active participation in the learning program by students with the activities on offer is what is required. For those that take-up this challenge, these are the students that have the greatest chance of success in their schooling.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

This week we have the opportunity to meet with you the parents and to hear from students one-on-one of the progress taking place within their learning. This is the opportunity for parents to listen and engage in dialogue not only with the teacher but with their own child in a three-way conversation. Progress and support of student learning is a partnership and it is hoped that many parents will take the opportunity to receive a progress report as well as establish some strategies to support their child’s learning at home.

The Administration Building Open for Business

The finishing touches are being made to the Administration Centre and over the holidays the move to the new centre will take place. The Administration Centre building will not only house, administration and finance staff, teaching staff and Leadership team members, it also provides facilities such as a Conference room for meetings and a Board room. In the interim the staff meeting areas will be the temporary home for the House Tutor groups of MacKillop and Romero as well as provide classroom spaces for 5 classrooms which the Year 9s will primarily use. Access for parents and visitors to the Administration Centre from the commencement of Term 2 will be via MacKillop Way, with provision for visitor car park spaces available. As the school continues to grow this addition is a welcome one as we strive to provide service to our community. Access for students from the beginning of Term 2 will be via the Student entry ONLY. This is located via the ramp facing towards the Graham building. The Discovery Centre has been home over the past years for the administration staff, it has also acted as a temporary classroom space as well as servicing the library needs of staff and students. From the commencement of Term 2 the Discovery Centre will resume its core service in the provision of library services. The Careers centre will also be housed here as well as Curriculum Support services. Both these services will support the needs of the senior students and offer opportunities for assistance and advice. More details about the Discovery Centre and its hours of operation will be provided soon.

Winter Uniform

A reminder that winter uniform is to be worn from the commencement of Term 2. Due to Term 2 commencing in early April, there will be some flexibility to be able to wear either summer or winter uniform for the first week only of Term 2. Parents and students are reminded about our zero tolerance policy to students not wearing school uniform correctly. For further information about Uniform expectations and requirements. Click here:

Supervising Students

All are reminded that once students are dropped off in the morning onto the school grounds or arrive in the morning on one of the school bus runs students must remain on the property. Likewise for students waiting for the bus at the end of the day they also must remain on the school grounds until pick-up time. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds and walk to the local shopping centre, “Shopping on Clyde”.

Congratulations to our HPV students

Our students competed in a 24 hour endurance event last weekend at Wonthaggi and are to be congratulated on their efforts. Parents, students and staff were met with some challenging weather conditions, particularly on the Friday which required some significant problem-solving skills and a heightened level of resoluteness. However all were ready to go come race day. The senior team, competing in the open section, placed a well-deserved and credible seventh place. This was some feat considering they were competing against students much older and more experienced. The junior team worked tirelessly over the 24 hours and continued to produce personal best laps time and time again. Congratulations is extended to all involved. Special thanks to Mr Wolinski, Mrs Dissegna and Miss Williams for all their support, guidance and hard work. Thanks is also extended to a terrific band of parents who supported the event by their attendance and their assistance in so many ways. We look forward to more successes ahead.

Best wishes are extended to eight students (seven from East and one from West) together with two staff members, Mrs Rosenblum and Ms Van Rens who will be travelling to New Caledonia over the first week of the school holidays for a French immersion experience. We wish them well and hope this learning experience is both valuable and rewarding. We look forward to hearing of their experiences upon their return.

Finally I wish all at St Peter’s College, especially the community of staff, students and parents at East Campus a Holy and peace-filled Easter. May the risen Christ be an inspiration to us all, inspiring in us the ability and desire to show hope and be the hope for others we may interact with or who come into our lives.

Social Media

Last week I referred you to an article by Andrew Fuller on how parents could help students manage their use of social media.  This week I would like to share with you the findings from a forum run by Project Rockit for the National Day Against Bullying.  Each year Project Rockit works with our Year 8 students to educate them on the issues of bullying.  Students made some important key insights for parents with regards their use of social media: Young people want more understanding from their parents about their use of technology and the positives of technology and social media. They don't want their parents liking ALL of their photos or tagging them on social media, but they're happy to be friends with them if they're more chilled! They want their parents and teachers to be empathetic if they go to them with an issues they're facing or if something has gone wrong. It would be cool if there were more privacy filters, so randoms can't add you or engage with you. Young people want everyone to be confident in putting a stop to negativity and spreading kindness instead of hate. Some of the key insights from the students is that parents don’t tend to understand the digital world and the value that young people place on social media. Their parents need to not like and tag their stuff so they don’t embarrass them. And need to be empathetic if young people go to them with issues or questions about something that may have gone wrong. The eSafety Commissioner, Alastair MacGibbon was also present and reminded students that "the internet is a reflection of ourselves and a space to reflect our best selves".  That is a message we need to keep reinforcing with our young people if they are all serious about creating a world where kindness thrives over hate, where everyone is respected, and where no one is excluded based on their gender, ethnicity, sexuality or any of their differences.

Student Anti-bullying Forum

Six forum leaders ranging from Year 8 – 11 attended an anti-bullying forum at Mount Eliza Secondary College on Thursday, 17 March.  The forum was facilitated by Project Rockit and experts Evelyn Field, Brett Lee and Steve Brunskill.  Some of our parents will remember Brett from our House Welcome & Information Evening where he presented on Cyber Safety. The students were encouraged in their leadership roles to explore some proactive strategies to address bullying and will meet this week with Mrs Anita Carter to consider a way forward that will make our school even safer for students against bullying.

City of Casey Student Leaders Reception

Last Thursday, 17 March, College Captains Karena MacNeely and Matthew Pask (West) and Amer Athiu and Lachlan Buckanen (East) went to the City of Casey Student Leaders Reception in Berwick.  Four secondary students delivered a number of intelligent and insightful messages for our young leaders.  They were reminded that they are leaders not only of tomorrow, but today. They were encouraged to release their own superpower by embracing their own story.  They were exhorted to make the most of their opportunities.  They were assured that their own resilience can help them shape their future. For all our leaders, however, the main speaker Mike Rolls was inspirational and motivational.  Having contracted meningococcal disease at age of 18 and subsequently losing both legs below the knees and some fingers on his right hand, Mike demonstrated that you can still live your dream.  He used humour and brilliant story-telling to engage us and help us believe that we already have the key to our own happiness within us all.The City of Casey would like to invite all parents to an Casey Youth Summit – Parent Consultation.  The aim of the consultation is to:

  • Identify the major barriers and challenges for young people and their families in the City of Casey
  • Provide a platform for parents and carers to voice their thoughts on what Casey Youth Services should consider providing in the future; and
  • Provide a platform for evaluation of the current Youth Services Strategy – Planning for the Future.

City of Casey Women of Note Mentor Breakfast

On Friday, 18 March, 6 Year 11 students braved cold and stormy weather at 6.30 in the morning to travel to Narre Warren for the Casey Women of Note Mentor Breakfast.  This annual event is an opportunity for young female students who are contemplating their career options to learn from the experiences of women who have been successful in their chosen industry.  Our students, Olivia Trebilco, Summa Wood, Gemma Clover and Britney Phillips, all from West Campus joined our East Campus students, Francesca Carganilla and Sara Elbazi to also hear an inspiring guest speaker, Kate Weiss.  Kate was the 2014 Telstra Women’s Business Award winner for developing her company “Table of Plenty”.  The students returned to school after the 2 hour breakfast very enthused by what they had heard.

Palm Sunday - Walk for Justice For Refugees

On Palm Sunday, 20 March, the 2016 Walk for Justice for Refugees was attended by a small but dedicated group of teachers.  Mr Jason Blackburn, Mr Peter Woodhouse, Mr Tim Hogan and myself all gathered under the St Peter’s College banner to express our solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers who are in detention on Manus Island and Nauru. My experience at St Peter’s College has shown me that the refugee families in our own College enriches our community at least as much as we as a nation have enriched them by granting them protection in a new home.  Our Catholic faith urges us to show compassion to those in need and I encourage our social justice group and all students of good will to consider supporting this issue in the future.  You are not just supporting an issue but real human beings in real need.

Last weekend, 18th – 20th of March fourteen riders, (Sean Humble, Michael Miller, Tim Miller, Damon Quirk, Rhys Davidson, Justine Davidson, Charlie Ratten, Dylan Powell, Allysa Kupke, Jack Johns, Madison Johns, Joshua Bartlett, Emily Coco and Maurice Garnett), three teachers, (Mr Ziggy Wolinski, Mrs Janine Dissegna and Miss Karen Williams), many parents and Phoenix and Shadowcat travelled to Wonthaggi for the annual 24 hour Human Powered Grand Prix held in the town.

This year 81 teams made the pilgrimage with riders coming from as far as Adelaide with rider ages ranging from 10 to over 60 years old. The area quickly became a tent city but the rain and strong winds tore down many tents and it was not until 9pm on the Friday that riders and crews finally began setting up pits and camp sites, and preparing for the coming race on Saturday. The two St Peter’s College HPV Team’s (from years 7 – 10) would be competing in the Open Secondary Category (students from years 7-12) which placed them in completion with riders from up to year 12.

The Easter Liturgies

This week we celebrate the Stations of the Cross. This is an ancient ritual where people walk the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem in memory of Jesus' journey to his death.  Some of the events recalled in the Stations are not recorded in the Gospels but are part of the tradition that believers have held on to. They give a human touch to a very tragic story.

This year we are also focussing on the Crown of Thorns. The mocking soldiers and onlookers ironically call Jesus for what he is - King, Leader, Saviour.  They put a crown on his head. The crown that Jesus wears is a painful crown. He wears it proudly. He knows that his kingship, his leadership brings life to a world in pain.

I invite everybody to join their community in celebrating the great mystery of Jesus death and resurrection. Allow the many chocolate eggs represent new life for all.

The annual collection for the support of the church in the Holy Land takes place on Good Friday.  This collection promotes the missionary work of the church in the Holy Land by providing welfare assistance to local Christians and is used to maintain 74 churches and shrines associated with the life of Jesus.  Please remember the Christians of the Holy Land again on this Good Friday.  Please also pray that peace and harmony will become a reality in the birthplace of Jesus, the ‘Prince of Peace’.

St Thomas the Apostle Parish

Language Exchange Program

Last week, both campuses welcomed the arrival of 8 students and 2 teachers from our sister school, Seishu Sapporo High School in Sapporo which is in the north of Japan. After a very long journey, students enjoyed a light afternoon tea before going home with their host family. Japanese students were able to attend classes at both campuses including food technology where they learnt how to make lamingtons and Anzac day biscuits. The students also visited a dairy farm in South Gippsland. An Assembly was held at the East Campus where St Peter’s College Japanese language students gave an official welcome to Sapporo High School. 

This cultural exchange was an experience which enabled students to make new friends with students from another country and culture. It also increased their confidence to speak the Japanese language and to go further with their studies. The benefits of learning a second language are significant and it is wonderful to see our students persist with their studies and embrace the opportunities that cultural programs bring them.

A huge thankyou to all the host families for providing a home to these young students.  Without hosting families, these programs would not be possible. We have another group of Japanese students arriving from 22 July to 2 August and a group of French students from New Caledonia will be at school from 5 – 14 September.

Miss Karissa Robertson has, in 2016, taken on the role of Choreographer for the St Peter’s College Musical Production 2016, HAIRSPRAY THE MUSICAL’ which will be staged at the George Jenkins Theatre in Frankston over four performances, starting with a Matinee Performance on 10th August, followed by three evening performances from Opening Night on Thursday 11th August through to our Closing Night Performance on Saturday 13th August. Karissa has extensive training and experience in Film, Drama and Dance. She will share with us the inspiration behind her passion for Production, both within the Education Sector and privately with a local Production Group.

Senior Curriculum VCE News

It has been an exciting, nervous and extremely busy time for our VCE students at the EAST campus.

I am delighted to be working with your sons and daughters and our wonderful VCE teachers here at the East Campus as we travel together the VCE road that will be at times difficult, hopefully fun, challenging, and frustrating, but definitely worthwhile.

Already we have been impressed by the level of commitment our VCE students are displaying. Many of our VCE students are regular in attending the additional support classes, extended study sessions in the DC as well as attending the Study Hub on a Wednesday afternoon.

Over the next few weeks, I would like to introduce the VCE East teaching team and share with you the journey that is truly unique for our EAST campus VCE students of 2016.

Year 7 Girls ONLY have a compulsary change  to the St Peter's College Girls White Monogrammed Pocket Blouse, which is worn with the St Peter's College Girls Bowtie.
Year 8 to 12 Girls can choose to make the change or to continue to wear the Girls White Shirt with the St Peter's College Tie.

The East Campus does not have receipting facilities to process cash or cheque payments. 

However, EFTPOS and credit card payments can me made via the East Campus General Office in the Discovery Centre. 

All cash and cheque payments must be made through the West Campus General Office.
