Remembrance Day

This week Mr Nelson and two students from the West Campus, Campbell Bryan and Celeste Hill represented St Peter’s College at the City of Casey, Remembrance Day Ceremony. In keeping with this tradition a short remembrance day activity was conducted in each classroom as a way of acknowledging not only those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the democratic freedom we all enjoy, but also the men and women who have served our country in a variety of roles during times of peace and war over the last 97 years since the first Armistice Day honouring the end of World War 1.

Today we remember with thanksgiving those who made the supreme sacrifice for us in time of war. We pray that the offering of their lives may not have been in vain. Today we dedicate ourselves to the cause of justice, freedom and peace; and for the wisdom and strength to build a better world.

Presentation Night Tickets

One of the challenges we face in the continued expansion of St Peter’s College is the allocation of tickets to our Annual Presentation Evening. We have again this year had to cap the number of tickets to 2 tickets per family for those students who are receiving Awards.

It is unfortunate that the only Theatre in the region has a maximum seating capacity of 800 which places us in the position of either reducing the number of our students who can receive an Award or limit the number of tickets available to each family.

As I am sure you can appreciate, we want to acknowledge as many students as we can for their efforts throughout the year.

Families who would like extra tickets may place their name on a waiting list through the school administration office however from past experience we do not envisage there will be many left over tickets which can be reallocated for this purpose.


I congratulate Caroline Passagne on her appointment to the staff of St Francis Xavier. After 15 years of valuable service to St Peter’s Ms Passagne will be taking up a House Leadership position at the Beaconsfield Campus and we wish her well in the next stage of her career. As a result of Ms Passagne's departure, Mr Jean-Paul Antoine has been appointed to the position of House Leader and Mr Ziggy Wolinski to the position of Assistant House Leader at the East Campus for the next 2 years.

I also thank Ms Larissa Schoormans who is leaving her role in Education Support at the East Campus over the last 2 years. We wish her well as she pursues a career pathway in the Primary sector with a focus on special education.

Baby News

I congratulate Ms Carla Edgerton and partner Chris on the birth of their first child Oscar Reid Moody last Friday weighing in at 7 pounds and 9 ounces. All are doing well.

Student Leadership 

In 2016 for the first time we will have a Year 12 Level at the East Campus and a total student population of approximately 550 students. In consultation with the College Board, 2016 has been deemed an appropriate time to put in place a Student Leadership structure for the East Campus which mirrors the Student Leadership Structure at the West Campus. This will see for the first time Co-College Captains elected to take on the responsibilities of student leadership on behalf of the growing number of students at each campus.

Once elected in November of this year, the student leaders will come together for a leadership training day which will be the first of many opportunities throughout the year where they will be able to work collaboratively as they consider the challenges and opportunities of leadership on their respective campuses.

Capital Grant Applications 2016

Over the last week, St Peter’s has submitted two Capital Grant Applications for facilities on both the East and West Campuses. On the East Campus , a Capital Grant for stage 5 , the Year 9 Learning Centre has been submitted which will see a purpose built Year 9 Facility to accommodate 200 year 9 students in a flexible learning environment with a focus on inquiry learning underpinned by the use of technology.

On the West Campus a Capital Grant Application has been submitted for the redevelopment of our TC3 and VA3 rooms into an Arts Precinct. At a cost of $1m. This will see the establishment of 3 purpose built Art rooms and sculpture courtyard which will accommodate all Year 7-12 Art classes.

In the case of the the West Campus application for 2016 Victorian Government Capital Works funding, should we be successful construction will commence in the second half of 2016. The East Campus Application for Federal Government Capital Grant Funding will be confirmed in late 2016, with construction taking place throughout the 2017 school year. The success of our Capital grant applications are vital to to the future development of both the East and West Campus.

Student Leadership

All Year 12 and 11 students are encouraged to consider leadership positions as they enter their final years at the College. Year 11 students have the opportunity to self-nominate as House Captain and Year 12 students may self-nominate for College Captain, Social Justice Captain, Liturgy Captain, Arts Captain, Environment Captain and House Captain. Students at St Peter’s are called to act as servant leaders to the College and the wider community, following St Peter’s example. In accepting their roles, student leaders at St Peter’s are encourage to aspire to be leaders who:
•    Lead and serve the College community through word and action; 
•    Are trust-worthy, responsible and supportive of the College ethos;
•  Encourage, motivate and challenge other members of the College     community to work together;
•    Honour what has been established and explore and initiate new ways of enhancing the life of the College;
•    Are worthy ambassadors for the College in the wider community.  

All Year 12 students will participate in a leadership day on Monday the 16th of November at the college and we hope that they will gain greater insight and understanding of what constitutes servant leadership, and be more confident to self-nominate for a leadership role within the College. 


It has been wonderful to see students morph into teachers during the exam period as they effectively demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understandings of concepts taught throughout the year, to each other. It is hoped that their collaboration and rich discussions will positively affect their results. 

Year 10 and 11 exams continue this week and will conclude on Friday 13th of November 2015. I congratulate all students of their efforts over the fortnight of exams and encourage them to sustain their effective study techniques as they enter Year 11 and 12 VCE Induction beginning Monday 16th of November 2015.  

Return of Text Books

As exams conclude on Friday 13th November, I ask that all Year 10 and 11 students return their book hire to the Discovery Centre on completion of each subject exam as the organisation of book hire for Year 11 and Year 12 Induction, which commences next week, is in progress.

SIS Art & Technology Exhibition

I had the pleasure of viewing many of our student’s works this week at the Southern Independent School’s Art & Technology Exhibition in Frankston. The St Peter’s students shone out amongst many wonderful pieces of art work.  It was good to catch up with a number of our students and parents for the opening on Monday, 9 November.  

The guest speaker, an artist who completed Year 12 five years ago at Nazareth College,  gave a most amusing and inspirational speech.  One of the important messages I heard was that it was important for students to choose the subjects they are passionate about and not necessarily based on an ATAR score.  You have to do what you love.  Secondly, and somewhat paradoxically, be prepared to do something you don’t necessarily want to do.  The young artist explained how she would much rather just be left alone to do her art, however, she realised that she had to market herself to succeed as an artist.  She had to network and speak to potential clients so that she could ultimately survive and indeed thrive in the competitive world of art.

I hope our students can learn the art of balancing what we have to do to lead us to what we really want to do.

Induction Program

Next week is the beginning of an induction fortnight for our current Year 10 and 11 students.  They will be commencing their 2016 VCE and VCAL programs.  This is a very important time for students to begin well their work for the important year ahead.  Holiday homework will be distributed to students and it is a great opportunity for any student who is seeking to excel.

For our current Year 11 students, Monday, 16 November is a Leadership Training Day.  Students are to wear sports uniform on this day.  They will undertake an engaging program and learn the St Peter’s model of servant leadership.  During the week students will give speeches and vote on their College and House Captains, which will be announced the following week.
Our current Year 10 students will all participate in Peer Support Leadership Training on Tuesday, 17 November.  They will also be required to wear their sports uniform for the day.  While this will not mean that these students have to be Peer Support Leaders in 2016, the training is an important part of their own growth and development.

Religious Education News

Every year, on 11 November at 11am – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations since the beginning of the 20th century. We observe a minutes’ silence as a mark of respect and recognition of the sacrifices made in pursuit of justice and freedom. For most of us, the more recent memories encompass the Second World War and the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.  

But, we also remember those who have suffered the ravages of war, not with the loss of life, but with bodily injury or illnesses that last for the rest of their lives. We remember too those who are enduring emotional or psychological suffering. We must not forget their families. These families’ members grieve; they suffer. We remember. As we remember and express gratitude for these men and women, we also honour both those who have died and our veterans who are with us. We do this not only in our minute of silence but by our prayers and our own commitment to seek justice which leads to true and lasting peace.

In Saint John’s Gospel, Jesus tells us: “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” Earlier he says, “I have told you this so that you have peace in me.” Yes, ultimately, in Jesus, we find our peace and our enduring hope. Holding on to his words, we entrust all whom we have remembered today to him—and ourselves as well. Christ Jesus alone is our peace, our hope and our life!

Lest we forget.

Change to Summer Uniform

With students currently wearing Summer Uniform we would like to remind our Parents of the College Uniform regulations:

Summer Dress Length:

Particular attention should be given to the Girls Summer Uniform Dress length, which is required to be on the knee or below. Students whose uniform does not meet this will be given, in the first instance a notice to recify it.

Boys White shirt:

Boys white shirt will change as of 2016, and all boys will be required to wear the new College Shirt which is an untucked style and has the College emblem embroidered on the pocket. The shirts are designed to be worn with or without a tie so are relevant throughout the year. These shirts can now be purchased from our Uniform Shop at the West Campus or online.

Presentation Night 2015

Wednesday November 25th

Students Artworks on Display in Foyer from 6.15 to 7.00pm

Presentation Night starts at 7.00pm

Students receiving awards will be sent an Invitation for them and their family to join us to see them presented with their award

As in recent years we will only be able to offer each family 2 tickets, and requests for more tickets will be able to be filled, only if room permits at the last minute. Tickets will be sent home with students in the week prior.

Parents of students who are undertaking positions of Leadership within the College in 2016 – College Captains & Campus House Captains will also be invited to join them on this night, as we see them take up their roles for the first time.

We aim to keep the evening length to a minimum, please note that all students will not be able to leave the Theatre until the close of the evenings program.
